MACHRIE HOTEL & GOLF LINKS, PORT ELLEN, ISLE OF ISLAY, PA42 7AT, SCOTLAND
Perhaps the most remote Championship links in the world, The Machrie Golf Links on the western island of Islay (pronounced I-Lah) makes for a very pleasant surprise.
It is an excellent test of traditional, Scottish links golf, with firm, fast running fairways and wonderfully undulating greens. The use of the natural terrain around the greens and approaches means landing your ball in the right spot, and more often than not, a low running shot is required to play to the greens. There are some blind shots, both off the tee and to greens, and this makes for a roller coaster experience.
An ideal short trip can combine the Machrie Golf links and Machrihanish Golf Club and the new Machrihanish Dunes on the Mull of Kintyre. Flights are available from near the Machrie and Machrihanish to Glasgow or it is possible to travel by ferry making a nice triangular journey taking in these outstanding links.
The Machrie will not disappoint. If you are looking for a high quality golfing experience to tell to your friends about for years to come, the Machrie is for you.
